A FAIR DAY TO SIT IN THE BATHTUB AND WATCH THE WORLD GO BY!
human&earth successfully completed the Sustainable living fair. Each year, the Sustainable living fair becomes larger with many booths and visitors. I was honored that the Sustainable Living Fair Committee gave me a booth space. The only challenge I had was a small budget of money. I thought to be sustainable is to use the resources that are already around you. Instead of making fancy signs at print shops, I made signs from used paper. If I made a mistake, instead of starting over with new paper, I would make do by covering the mistake with small portion of paper. Other times, I would tape a picture over the error. It may look unprofessional to some, but to others the most resourceful I could possible make. Bathtub As I was biking to my part time job as a tennis coach, I saw a bathtub in the front yard of a families yard sale. I talked to one of the family members and told him what how I would use this tub that was taken apart and laying in different places of the yard. He said I can have the bathtub. I went back to my house and later that night came with my truck to load it. When we finished loading the truck, the boy said that his grandmother was very upset for him to give away the bathtub with no money. She was trying to collect as much money as possible to avoid being evicted from her house. I gave him all the money I had in my wallet, 7 dollars, and I gave him a promise that I would return the bathtub by the end of the week. Yes, I rented a bathtub. The photos, pens, tape and paper for the event cost me 13 dollars, so in full the booth and set up all cost me 20 dollars. I borrowed the tent from a good friend.
Recycle bins My goal was to have people bring phone books to the fair. With the phone books, I could do artwork with phone books and those who brought the phone books. Games would include; 1. Who could rip a whole phone book in half. 2.Who could destroy a whole phone book to no more than 10 pages stuck together in size. This was to show how machines have to break the books down before recycling and how many phone books are not recycled because they are large bounded books 3.Rip the covers off and let others paint them like prayer flags from Tibet. 4.Stack phone books into artwork such as couches more.
I had request Qwest Dex to provide a recycle bin. I thought since Qwestdex distribute the most phone books (over 300,000 in Fort Collins), they can be responsible to collect the phone books. QwestDex would not confirm to provide the recycle bins until 2 days prior of the fair and on one condition only. Qwest dex would not provide the recycle bins unless they were able to put banners on the side of the bin about how great of a company they are. I agreed as it is better to have a few phone books collected than to have none. I did not have enough time to advertise people to bring phone books to the booth. But before requesting people to do so, I wanted to make sure that I would be able to remove the phone books and have them recycled so it fell through this time but I can make the adjustments for next time!!!
Here are some of the photos of the event

In a few short hours, human&earth received over 300 names and signatures to have a law be that phone books can only leave a business card on the doorstep, not a 3 pound phone book. Then those who want a phone book can call to receive the phone book of their choice rather than 4 different books.

Many people would give me a double look as I was sitting in the bathtub. Some would take pictures, others would be a little embarrassed to see a man in a bathtub, even if the tub was full of paper and I was clothed. It was a great conversation starter and a chance to have a little humor with negative information. Again, trying to not only raise awareness, but to be positive geared and to have a healthy resolution to the matter.

I returned the bathtub shortly after taking this picture. Several of the family members doubted that I would bring back the tub. But the boy who lent it to me was laughing and relieved that I brought the tub back. "I told you he would come back!!!", he said. Afterwords, I showed them the pictures of the fair and their bathtub in the middle of a field. I am sure they did not expect to see where their tub went and how it was useful to so many people. I go by their yard each day and they have yet to sell the tub, but I hope they do and collect enough money for their rent.
Many more people were educated by how large phone book businesses can harm the environment by trying to make fast money. I will present the signatures and all the new stories to the city council. I thank everyone who has helped with this project and support it!
